More than two dozen club sports exist on the University of Arkansas campus, and this week the bowling, skeet and other squads were looking for new members.

For years, organic farmer Guy Ames grew conventional varieties of fruits in Newton and Washington Counties. But he was forced to abandon farming, after watching his orchards collapse from disease and pests. Ten years later, he’s farming again, cultivating hardy Ozarks-adapted apples, grapes, paw paws, pears as well as novel drought-tolerant fruit tree stock to sell to local growers. In 1963, Al Kuettner covered the March on Washington and Dr. King's speech on August 28, 1963. In 2007, he talked to Ozarks at Large about that day. His memoir is titled March to a Promised Land and was published in December, 2006. He died in May 2009.

Ahead on this edition of Ozarks at Large, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission makes strides towards the purchase of new land in Newton County in hopes of developing more of a presence in that area. Plus, portions of a sizable rewards grant are awarded to schools in perhaps an unlikely district. And we'll speak with members of the regional champion archery team to learn how they mark their anchors and more.
Last June, a flash flood along the Little Missouri River swept through a remote portion of the Alpert Pike Recreational Area on the Ouachita National Forest, west of Hot Springs. Twenty campers were killed. The USDA Forest Service ordered an inquiry. As Jacqueline Froelich reports, what emerged was a nationwide plan to better protect visitors on national park recreation sites.
October is American Archives Month. This will be noted tomorrow afternoon at three inside Mullins Library. Keynote speakers for this event devoted to history will be a pair of teenage historians. Sarah and Emma Bailin attend Central High in Little Rock and have been making short documentaries since they were eleven years old. They'll screen their film "Return to Sender" about the 1980 Cuban refugee crisis at Fort Chaffee and how that event changed Arkansas' political landscape.
